Tucked away in a quaint coffee shop at the end of Block 125 Bukit Merah Lane 1, is a humble stall named, (or unnamed and known as) “Wanton Mee”. Stepping into Hong Kong Street Chun Kee Coffee Shop brings back all the nostalgic feels, even more so when you taste the wanton mee which is prepared and served the old school way. At the same time, it comes with a twist in the form of a fried egg.

Wanton mee is the only option on the menu. You can order either the small ($3) or big ($4) plate depending on your appetite. As the price point is very pocket-friendly, why not perk up your meal by adding on a sunny side up drizzled with soya sauce for just $0.70? You may also request to have your noodles tossed in tomato sauce instead of chilli.

The unique feature of this wanton mee is the add on of a sunny side up. This combination that is almost unheard of brings a burst of flavour to the usual taste of wanton mee that we are familiar with. It’s almost like the girl next door you’ve known all your life going for a makeover. You recognise her but you are swept off your feet by the transformation. I highly recommend that you add the fried egg to your noodles as this would be what you came here for (if you travelled all the way here), and it’s what will bring you back again.

With every plate, the wantons are served on the side submerged in soup. The fragrance of the minced meat wrapped in the wanton was more than expected. The wanton skin was not too fragile as it didn’t tear apart easily even though it was in the soup for a while. Unlike most stalls, their soup didn’t taste like there was a ton of MSG added in the making.

To order, simply approach any of the friendly uncles and they’ll serve you at your seat. Do note that they only accept cash and payment is made upon arrival of the food.

All in all, it is a good place for a quick lunch if you’re around the area or if you’re craving for some good ol’ wanton mee.
