If anything can bring me to this part of Singapore, it has to be great food. News about the rare kacang pool, that was allegedly one of the best, buzzed and got us pretty psyched about visiting this ulu part of Bedok. The afternoon crowd was sparse, yet a line was forming at Warung Nyai Rose. This definitely piqued our interest — is the kacang pool really as good as they say?

The Kacang Pool ($4) is a stew, with a mushy texture, that’s probably derived from broad or fava beans. Forget disputing over whether a good kacang pool should have a chunky texture or a smooth one. Here, the beans are mashed just right, and diners can expect consistent thick mouthfuls of bean stew.

The stew carries a nutty flavour that pairs well with the complimentary baguette. Such a dish surely doubles as comfort food for some. The texture of the already rich stew is enhanced by the runny yolk that came with it. If you love kacang pool, I’d say for certain that you will wipe this plate clean.

One is never enough, and that’s why we had to order the Laksa ($3), especially when we noticed a couple of patrons having it. Unlike the usual laksa, their rendition features a handful of thick udon noodles swimming in a watery broth. A handful might appreciate the uniqueness of the laksa, but I thought it could be improved.

The udon was bland as it did not do well in absorbing the broth. The broth was light and somewhat refreshing, but it lacked the richness and aroma found in the usual laksa. The chilli paste brought out the tanginess of the broth though.

The kacang pool definitely warrants a visit. On the other hand, the laksa might be slightly underwhelming but hey, who knows? You might appreciate a different approach to this local delight!
