Amidst the relentless changes that impact our hawkers, we should celebrate and support the hawkers and stalls that withstood the test of COVID. And Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee at Market Street Interim Hawker Centre certainly deserves our unwavering support. The stall, which was started by an affable couple who’s now in their 80s, has been dishing out Lor Mee for over 40 years!

The stall first opened in 1975 at the former Boat Quay Food Centre, and shifted several times before settling at its current location at Market Street Interim Hawker Centre in 2018. They intend to shift to Golden Shoe Food Centre, which is currently going through renovations, in the future.

The couple starts preparation at their stall at 6am every morning.

The stall’s lor mee comes in two sizes — small ($3) and large ($4). Customers can choose from flat yellow noodles, round yellow noodles, or white bee hoon for their lor mee.

I tried two bowls of large Lor Mee ($4), one with flat yellow noodles and another with white bee hoon. Each bowl of lor mee was teeming with ingredients such as handmade meatballs, pork skin, crispy fried crackers, and sliced braised lean meat. A thick flavourful gravy coated the ingredients, and the bowl was topped with a scoop of garlic, chillies, and vinegar. The handmade meatball was very unique, and tasted somewhat like ngoh hiang, but with a crispy exterior. Another ingredient that made the lor mee stand out was the pig’s skin which was braised till tender and juicy.

While the gravy wasn’t as flavourful as what’s served at other lor mee stalls, the heavy dose of vinegar and garlic pulled their weight and lent a punch of flavours to the dish. Surprisingly, the stall adds fried crackers instead of fish to the lor mee, which amazingly retained its crispiness even after being soaked in the gravy.

Overall, Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee has a winning timeless recipe. I will surely be back!
