Wing Liao Lor – A New Father-Daughter Venture in Our Hawker Scene

Win Liao Lor! That’s what people say when someone else has the upper hand in a certain situation.  “Wing Liao Lor” is an intentional pun based on the popular catchphrase which is also closely associated with the famous Mark Lee meme that we see going around on social media.

Wing Liao Lor all started with Kenny’s desire to try something new after more than 20 years of working as a chef in different restaurants. Though a father and daughter team, Jacelyn and Kenny do have their disagreements at times too. However, this only made them learn to understand each other better as they work towards a common goal and dreams.

The few-month-old stall serves up Mee Siam ($3.50), Lontong ($3.50) and Nasi Lemak ($3.50 – $5). Other than traditional delights, they also have some Western food like Chicken Cutlet ($5) and Truffle Fries ($3.50).

Mee Siam and Lontong are Kenny’s all-time favourite breakfast meals, so he spent much time over the years figuring out something different for each recipe. While many are familiar with these dishes, the ones found at Wing Liao Lor are different as they are Nyonya-style fare. Kenny shared that there are a few types of spices added in the making of the gravy, which makes it more aromatic than usual. The aromatic gravy is not only the winning factor but also the very thing that sets them apart.

The flavourful mee siam was topped with crispy tofu puffs and egg floss, which were surprisingly good! I loved that the crunchy toppings went really well with the noodles!

Lontong is one of my favourite breakfast foods too! I love the addition of their handmade sambal which added an extra spicy kick to the gravy. Although the soup base is already spicier than usual, the sambal really turned up the heat.

We heeded Kenny’s recommendation and got their signature Nasi Lemak Set 3. The set came with their signature curry chicken wings, a sunny side up with runny egg yolk, a huge piece of otah, ikan bilis and peanuts. It definitely seemed like a value-for-money meal at first glance, because the plate was packed full of ingredients! And, I’m happy to report that you will feel that you’re getting more than your money’s worth. The rice was fluffy, soft and very fragrant, especially when paired with some sambal chilli.

The set surely didn’t disappoint with the star of the show being the curry chicken wings. You might be expecting the curry sauce to be drizzled over the deep-fried chicken wings. However, that is not the case at all! The curry and turmeric flavours are infused into the batter that coats the wings before they are deep-fried. You’ll be surprised to see how crispy the chicken wings are! The moist and tender chicken was just lovely, and I appreciated that the curry flavours were not too overpowering. Those who generally enjoy more savoury foods might think that this is lacking a tad in flavour though.

Last but not least, my favourite dish from this stall — the Chicken Cutlet with a homemade salted-egg yolk sauce. This is a must-try in my opinion. The cutlet had a crispy breaded exterior that wrapped around tender and juicy meat. It paired flawlessly with the sauce on the side. Once again, *chef’s kiss*. It’s just a perfect pairing.

There were a few other items on the menu that I have yet to try, like the trendy truffle fries that are going at a super affordable price of $3.50 and their Cripsy Chicken Cutlet Sets with fries and different dip ($7.50/set). I’ll definitely be back to try them if I’m in the area!
