Winner’s Fried Chicken – Malaysian Chain Enters The Singapore Fried Chicken Scene

If there’s something I will never get tired of eating, it’s fried chicken. Unfortunately, most of the time, I’m met with dry chicken meat and tasteless batter. As my hunt for good fried chicken continues, I found a new contender for the best fried chicken in Singapore. Hailing from Malaysia is Winner’s Fried Chicken.

Having originally started out as a humble hawker stall in 1987, the brand’s success had led the owners of this popular Malaysian brand to license out their name and recipe to aspiring entrepreneurs.

The fried chicken chain opened its first Singapore franchise recently in Alexandra, just a hop and skip away from the IKEA store there. Thankfully, the queues had all died down by the time I made my visit there.

You can opt for half or a whole spring chicken set ($5-$9.50) that also comes with a side of fries. If you’re like me who’s super picky about getting her favourite parts of the chicken, their a la carte menu allows you to pick from chicken wing ($1.50), chicken thigh ($2.50), chicken breast ($2) and chicken drumstick ($2.80).

I decided to get one of each, plus a serving of carbs in the form of fries ($2). Thankfully, it had still retained some of its warmth during my journey back to the office and still looked decently crispy on the outside. The batter wasn’t as crisp as I would have liked it to be and tasted rather plain despite being advertised as having skin marinated with a number of herbs and spices.

Despite that, I was won over by the chicken meat. While it also wasn’t marinated, the tenderness of the warm chicken was apparent even by looks alone. It was not at all like the dry chicken meat I had half-expected to see so it was quite a pleasant surprise. I wouldn’t mind whipping up my own sauces to go with this soft chicken.

The fries were nothing special and reminded me of the usual that is served at most western stalls in hawker centres: unsalted and slightly soggy but still somewhat firm.

In conclusion, I wouldn’t have joined any queues for Winner’s Fried Chicken but it’s an option if it’s a quick buy. As for the title of best fried chicken in Singapore, the jury’s still out.
