One of my fondest memories is stepping into a hidden izakaya on an icy cold street in Tokyo, treating myself to a variety of Japanese skewers that warmed me up. That experience cemented my love for skewer bars. When I heard about this Singaporean skewer bar in Simpang Bedok, I visited immediately.

WOW 哇烤Skewer Bar resembles a Japanese pub, sending out A4 Wagyu Yakiniku ($20), Teriyaki Skewers ($1.8-$2.2) and more. They also offer zichar dishes such as La La Fried Bee Hoon ($10) and Lok Bak (Braised Meat, $6).

After much deliberation, I ordered the WOW Skewer Bowl ($5.5), Lok Bak ($6) and Grilled Squid ($8).

The WOW Skewer Bowl ($5.5) came with 2 skewers — chicken thigh and pork meatball. Also in the bowl was some homemade achar, an onsen egg, and a bed of rice. The chicken thigh skewer was nicely marinated and flavorful but the pork meatball was even better. The pork meatball had a nice char and was firm and springy.

I can never resist Lok Bak ($6). As it says slow-cooked on the menu, I will expect nothing less than a melt-in-the-mouth piece of meat. And it did exactly that. It was, however, extremely porky, and the braised sauce was a tad oily. Get a bit of everything, including the gooey egg yolk, in one bite and you’ll find yourself grinning from ear to ear.

The Grilled Squid ($8) was thick, not too chewy, and well cooked. The flavours of the squid were masked by the strong seasoning. The dish came with tangy sambal which tasted similar to the one slathered on BBQ Stingray.

I suspected that the overall strong flavour profile of all the dishes was no coincidence as they were made to pair perfectly well with an ice cold beer. WOW 哇烤 Skewer Bar does offer a selection of beer and soju.

The man behind the stove, Bryant, thought that a Singaporean-style skewer bar would be a fresh addition to the local food scene. Bryant enjoys his beer as well, which might be a key motivation behind the inception of WOW 哇烤 Skewer Bar.

Overall, do not expect sophisticated flavours but if you’re looking for straightforward and tasty dishes that taste awesome with an ice cold beer, WOW 哇烤 Skewer Bar is your place.
