I was heartbroken when my go-to Chinese dumpling stall in Marine Parade closed for good, but I thank God that this stall is still around, even after the circuit breaker. 嬉旺 拉面.锅贴 (Xi Wang La Mian . Guo Tie) can be easily missed as it’s hidden in the far corner of the coffee shop. To make wayfinding easier, look out for the popular stall, King of Pao Fan which is just next to Xi Wang. As someone who really loves dumplings, I am super glad to find this just a short walk away from home.

Xi Wang has only been around for about 3 years. Although it is not being put on the map, it still draws a consistent queue! Fun fact : if you Google the stall name, you can’t even find any results of it.

I got the Fried Dumpling ($4, 8 pieces), Red Oil Wanton ($4, 8 pieces) and Pork Ribs La Mian in Sour and Spicy Soup [酸辣汤] ($4.50).

The filling in the dumpling is made of a mixture of pork and chives. The chives were in slightly bigger pieces and the amount was more substantial as compared to the pork and chives dumplings elsewhere. You might want to be careful when you bite into the dumpling as the soup and juices from the pork would ooze out.

Only eight pieces of this goodness might not be enough. While the dumpling is yummy on its own, don’t forget the vinegar dip! It was a little sad that ginger wasn’t available that day, but at least the dumplings were still tasty.

The Red Oil Wanton was juicy and was kept moist by the red oil sauce. However, it was not as spicy as I would have liked it to be. It was more vinegary than it was spicy, in my opinion.

The filling is made of just minced pork. The proportion of skin to meat was about a 2:3 ratio. There wasn’t too much wanton skin flapping around and it was soft and silky too! Go ahead and spam the chilli sauce that is available on the condiments table, if you want your wanton to be more spicy.

Last but not least, we had the Pork Ribs La Mian in Sour and Spicy Soup. There are three kinds of soup bases to choose from – Original, Mala and Sour and Spicy. There are also two types of noodles available for pairing with the pork ribs and soup – La Mian or Bee Hoon. I picked la mian with sour and spicy soup this time round.

It was actually my first time trying this soup base, and I must say that it was quite enjoyable. The soup didn’t have the MSG taste, and it was not too strong in flavour. Initially, the subtle flavours made it taste like just another regular bowl of soup, but the sourness kicked in after awhile and gradually built up. Despite it supposedly being sour and spicy, it was not spicy. But you can always add more chilli to it!

The highlight of this was definitely the pork ribs. They were SO TENDER. You don’t need a lot of effort to separate the meat from the bone as it would come off right away. The pork ribs carried a hint of herbs, and were seasoned well.

The la mian was QQ and very chewy. It was not like the commercial la mian, as it is handmade by the uncle using wheat flour in-house! If you love la mian, you would be happy to know that he gives a really generous portion of it.

What’s more, you can even order the frozen version of the dumpling, wanton and la mian to cook at home! Here’s to finding more places with delicious dumplings!
