Xiang Ji Roast Chicken Rice & Noodles – Flavourful Char Siew & Roasted Pork in Bukit Batok

Hidden in a coffee shop in Bukit Batok is Xiang Ji Roast Chicken Rice & Noodles. Their menu boasts a wide selection consisting of not only Roasted Chicken but also, Barbecued Pork, Roasted Pork Belly, Pork Ribs and Roasted Duck. You can also opt to have your favourite meats with rice, noodles or Hor Fun!

I was first greeted with a glorious plate of Char Siew Roasted Pork Rice ($4) where a generous serving of meat sat on a bed of fluffy white rice topped with some black sauce. I dove straight for a thick piece of Roasted Pork, and really liked how the skin was still extremely crispy and crunchy. The meat was rather tender, with hints of five spice seasoning, and each piece also had a nice meat-to-fat ratio. While it was a little too salty to have on its own, that problem was quickly fixed with a spoonful of rice.

Moving on to the reddish Char Siew that came with some char on it. This gave me some mixed feelings. Some of the smaller pieces I had were almost melt-in-your-mouth and easy to chew through. On the other hand, the slightly bigger ones were tougher. But what was kept consistent was the sweet yet savoury BBQ marinate that permeated the meat. That said, while it was packed with flavours, it was not too salty!

I had their Roasted Duck Noodle ($3.50) next. Here, the duck was succulent and juicy, and it still had quite a fair bit of the distinctive duck taste. The skin  provided a nice chew and I liked that the duck was quite meaty.

I opted to have my duck with noodles instead of rice or Hor Fun. but I thought that the noodles could do with a little more flavour. The egg noodles were also a little too overcooked but I think that could be rectified easily.

What’s dropping by a Chicken Rice shop without having their Roasted Chicken Rice, am I right? Similar to the other two plates I received, the portion of Roasted Chicken Rice ($3.50) was rather generous for its price. But if I were to return, I would just skip this and go straight for their Char Siew instead.

The thin cuts of Chicken were a tad too salty for my liking, and the rice lacked the fluff and flavour we all know and love in a good plate of Chicken Rice. The Chilli also did not help to elevate the flavours, but merely provided some spice. The only saving grace would be the side of soup that came with all the mains. The clear broth was light, and had a pleasant ginger aftertaste to help cut through the greasiness of the roasted chicken.

With rather generous portions, Xiang Ji Roast Chicken Rice & Noodles will fill you up without burning a hole in your wallet. If you happen to be in the Bukit Batok area, you might want to drop by to get your Char Siew and Roasted Pork fix!
