心板面 Xin’s Ban Mian – Their Dry Noodle Sauce is Very Addictive and Shiok!

What’s so different about this ban mian stall when ban mian is found in almost every hawker centre in Singapore? For one, this stall only has you mian (幼面) and mee hoon kueh (面粉粿) instead of the wide variety of noodles that you usually encounter. At Xin’s Ban Mian, Melody makes her noodles and chilli from scratch.

Another unique feature is that they have a selection of quality seafood items such as tiger prawns, razor clams and even baby abalones in their signature bowl. Fret not if you’re on a budget or if you are not a fan of seafood. They also have the usual Minced Pork Mee Hoon Kueh/You Mian ($4).

I got the Signature Seafood with You Mian with soup ($13) and the Minced Pork with Mee Hoon Kueh dry ($4).

First up, the Signature Seafood bowl. It reminded me of the pen cais that I had during the Chinese New Year period. It almost felt like CNY isn’t over yet. Well, I guess at Xin’s Banmian, you don’t have to wait till the next CNY to enjoy abalones.

It was a crowded bowl with many ingredients. Highlights include the three huge tiger prawns, two abalones, and quite a few clams. All these for for just $13!

The soup might appear bland at first. However, the mellow flavour gradually intensifies, and the soup leaves a sweet aftertaste. I love that the noodles were QQ and not clumpy!

If you love all things spicy, you have to try their homemade chilli sauce. It’s gravy-like with bits of chilli flakes in it. The garlicky taste gets more intense as you go along.

The tiger prawn was not deshelled or deveined before cooking, so if you’re getting anything with prawns here, be ready to get your hands dirty!

As for the dry mee hoon kueh, don’t think that the black sauce is the typical kind that you find at other stalls. Xin’s version of the black sauce is homemade as well, and it is SPICY. I didn’t even need to add extra chilli to it, and it’s already got me gasping for air after a few mouthfuls, but it was too shiok to stop. Shoutout to those of you who order zhong la and above for your mala, you would love this.

On to the minced pork mee hoon kueh (MHK). The MHK is also one of a kind as it is thinner and smoother than usual. The texture of it reminds me of pasta more than the thick and clumpy mee hoon kueh that I am accustomed to.

There were a few odd-shaped minced meatballs in the bowl that all added up to quite a substantial amount of meat. The well braised mushrooms added a burst of flavour as well.

In short, this is a unique ban mian stall that is worth a try if you’re in the area. I would be craving the unique black sauce from time to time because it was really shiok!
