Yi Liu Xiang – Delicious Nasi Lemak for Only $2.50!

A long queue is always observed at Yi Liu Xiang nasi lemak at Hainanese Village. It’s no surprise though — a plate of lip-smacking nasi lemak goes for just $2.50. Expect coconut-flavored rice, paper-thin omelette, a side of ikan billis, a dollop of fiery chili paste, and your choice of fish cake or fried fish fillet. Diners can also top up for more ingredients.
To satiate my morning hunger, I got 2 plates of nasi lemak(one with fish cake, and the other with fish fillet). I added a piece of otah ($1) to each plate. Yi Liu Xiang’s fluffy coconut rice was quite flavourful, and I liked that the rice was not lumpy or dry. The chilli, which isn’t made in-house, was really spicy!
The fish fillet was pretty ordinary but was a tastier option than the fish cake in my opinion. I think the ingredient that stood out most was the fried Japanese silverfish which was fragrant and crunchy. My favourite item was the otah. Expect moist ground fish meat that’s been flamed grilled to perfection. Treat yourself, and get at least an otah to pair with your nasi lemak!
Yi Liu Xiang doesn’t serve cucumber slices, fried peanuts, sunny-side up fried eggs, and fried chicken wings. I was a little taken aback by the absence of chicken wings, but I guess that does not deter loyal fans from patronising Yi Liu Xiang. The perpetual long queue is proof that their nasi lemak is one of the best.
