There’s nothing like a comforting cup of freshly brewed soy milk and crispy toasted snacks to kickstart the day.

Popular Taiwanese eatery Yong He Eating House in Geylang is known for delicious breakfast items. Now, fans of the 24/7 outfit will be delighted to know that they are opening three new outlets in the heartlands, starting with a spanking new store in Toa Payoh!

Opened in 1986, the flagship store is especially famous for its sweet or salty beancurd and you tiao, and they also serve a variety of items such as dim sum, lu rou fan, and shao bing (Taiwanese-style flatbread or ‘Toasted Buns’ at Yong He) at wallet-friendly prices.

The launch of Yong He Toast, the first takeaway kiosk in Toa Payoh, on 20 November saw snaking queues. Yong He Toast is expected to open two more kiosks in Sengkang and Jurong West in the future.

The Toa Payoh kiosk features shao bing, with classic and unique fillings, on their lean menu. The shao bing comes as an a la carte item, or as a set with a 500ml soy milk. Although the famous beancurd isn’t on the menu for now, patrons can still enjoy their soy milk! Unlike the Geylang outlet that opens all day, Toa Payoh’s Yong He Toast only opens from 9am to 4pm from Tuesdays to Sundays.

The kiosk is tucked in a corner of 177 Toa Payoh Central, and is decorated with calming pastel pink tiles and a large bright menu. I love that patrons can see the shao bing being made fresh on the spot.

The toasted buns are baked on-site to ensure freshness, while the you tiao is fried at the Geylang store before being transported to the Toa Payoh kiosk. The kiosk has an efficient queuing system with ticket numbers issued to customers. Since it’s a takeaway outlet, be prepared to get home quick with these piping hot delights!

I got Floss + Egg combo ($5), a classic Taiwanese pairing for breakfast! I’m surprised that the shao bing maintains its crispness even after spending some time in a bag. Its interior was fluffy and chewy, and the savoury floss filling and light scrambled egg bits were quite tasty. The fresh soy milk that comes with the set was on the sweeter side, but still makes a refreshing drink anytime of the day.

There are seven new delicious combos that are exclusive to the Toa Payoh Kiosk, and I decided to try two of them!

One of them was Braised Pork + Crisp Fritters ($4). Expect some crunch as you bite down on the ensemble. The you siao was doughy enough and not exceedingly crispy or hard, and went hand in hand with the lightly crisp shao bing and tender braised minced pork bits.

If you’re looking for a local twist, don’t miss out on the new Kaya ($2.80) shao bing that has a generous spread of kaya coating the toast inside.

So, if you’re craving for Taiwanese treats, drop by Yong He Toast at Toa Payoh to get your breakfast fix!
