I have been wanting to try Yong Xiang Carrot Cake for the longest time but whenever I am there for a meal, they are either closed or sold out for the day. Imagine the excitement when I had it for breakfast today. *screams*

What’s the big deal, you may wonder? It just looks like any other carrot cake stall. Well, except that they also sell Teochew Png Kueh, Soon Kueh and Ku Chai (chives) Kueh.

Now if you take a closer look at what people are ordering, you might raise your eyebrows. You can select the Teochew kuehs which you like and get the aunty to fry it for you. Unique, isn’t it? Plus, you can choose if you want to add eggs to be fried with your kuehs, and if you will like a drizzle of sweet dark sauce at the end.

This is such a brilliant dish. Why didn’t anyone think of it earlier?

Not sure if this makes sense to you, or you probably can’t get your head around it. I believe this is the only stall in Singapore that does pan-fried Teochew kuehs in carrot-cake style. And it is very good.

The aunty chops up the kuehs into pieces on the pan with her metal spatula, cracks an egg, adds chilli and fries them up, just like how she would for carrot cake. I was being greedy and ordered a total of four kuehs – png kueh, yam kueh, ku chai kueh and soon kueh. My plate of delicious mess costs $6. But it is so worth it.

The chunks of kueh have a really QQ texture. Pan-frying them gives them a pleasant smoky aroma and an addictive crisp on the skin. In every mouthful, I get a combination of glutinous rice, turnip and chives. That’s like the best of all worlds.

You definitely need to pick the right day to go because the stall is closed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I haven’t tried their carrot cake so I cannot comment much, but this pan-fried teochew kueh is a great breakfast option you won’t mind waking up early for!
