YY Ka Fei Dian – 不要想歪歪喔 (please don’t think dirty). That’s just a joke! Back to topic, this coffeeshop is very crowded during lunchtime on weekdays. We were surprised when we were shown their extensive menu. From seafood to meat, to noodles, to rice, this coffeeshop has got your lunch fix covered. However, the real star here is their soft kaya buns!

Baked in-house, these buns boast a crisp light crust and a fluffy and super soft interior. A generous amount of kaya is spread on the soft buns, before they are topped with a slab of savoury butter. We love the texture of the soft buns and the coconut-infused kaya enhanced the overall taste. Get the set ($3.70) which comes with an aromatic cup of kopi and two soft-boiled eggs for a simple but great breakfast!

Since the coffeeshop is popular for its traditional Hainanese fare, we decided to try the Chicken Rice ($4). The chicken is tender and succulent, and there’s a nice silky layer of gelatine under the skin which some of you might like. The rice is aromatic and has a good consistency, complementing the chicken well. This dish is pretty decent, but there’s nothing to rave about.

The other classic Hainanese dish served here is the Hainanese Pork Chop ($9/$12/$15). We like pairing this with the chicken rice, which brings us back to our childhood days. Unfortunately, the lean pork cutlet is a little on the dry side, though the tomato sauce has a balanced mix of tanginess and sweetness.

The other dish that is highly recommended by customers at YY Ka Fei Dian is the Claypot E-fu Noodles ($5.50). A generous portion of piping hot e-fu noodles and a good variety of ingredients such as vegetables, yam cubes, and prawns, are drenched in a thick, gooey, and flavoursome sauce. It is then topped with a glorious egg. The noodle has a nice bite, and isn’t too mushy. For the portion, this dish is value-for-money.

If you happen to work nearby, you should give their kaya buns a try! Treating your colleagues to a meal but don’t want to burn a huge hole in your pocket? You can consider YY Ka Fei Dian as there’s bound to be something for everyone. Well, that’s if you don’t mind a non-airconditioned environment.
