Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly with Staff

Ah Po (elderly lady) was sitting in front of the stall and smiling widely at me after I placed my order with her son. I bet lots of people ask her if she is the ‘granny’. Pointing to the signboard, she said that the original Granny started out selling chin chow (grass jelly) on the streets. Yeo Hwee Seng, the owner, decided to pick up where his grandmother left off. The late Granny may be gone, but the original recipe remains the same and the grass jellies are still made by hand today.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly Overview 2

“Hey, I have these bowls at home too!” I exclaimed upon seeing the grass jelly being served in these oriental porcelain bowls. Thankfully, I only opted for 2 toppings for each small bowl of cold chin chow (grass jelly). I wouldn’t want any reduction in the amount of grass jelly just to accommodate more toppings.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly with Longan & Nata De Coco

Each small bowl of grass jelly costs $1.50 while every additional topping costs 50 cents. I had to go with my favourite 2 toppings (longan and nata de coco) and I absolutely love the combination! The grass jelly had a consistent texture and was extraordinary smooth and slippery. The chunks are quite big so cut them into smaller pieces with the metal spoon if you like.

Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly with Palm Seeds & Coconut

For the second bowl, I decided to try the attap chee (palm seeds) and sea coconut. I don’t really enjoy attap chee because the central part is quite hard to chew at times. Fortunately, the attap chee and the sea coconut were both acceptably soft.

Both bowls were sweet and refreshing. There are 4 toppings to choose from, so you can customise your bowl to your liking. Just be sure to savour it fast as the ice melts really fast.

Toppings can’t be added for takeaway orders of large bowls of grass jelly, as the jelly already fills the container to the brim. If you happen to buy in bulk for your colleagues or family, you may want to get 10 so that you’ll get another bowl for free. If you’re near Golden Mile Food Centre, be sure to visit this stall which sells only 1 item since decades ago. There’s a high chance that you’ll get to meet the cutesy Ah Po if you patronise Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly before 1pm!
