My aunt loves cooking tau suan so this is my favourite dessert since I was young. She would usually cook a big pot while my grandfather would buy fried dough fritters (you tiao) from the food centre to pair with it.

When we rented an office space near Bugis, one of the things I got excited about was being able to have tau suan for breakfast regularly because Zheng Xing Mei Shi is just nearby, at Albert Centre. Dessert lovers will definitely know this stall as they sell only 4 types of dessert – Tau Suan, Green bean with sago and coconut cream, Bubur Terigu, Bubur Pulut Hitam. In addition, they are only open for 4 days each week.

Dried longan is added into the Bubur Pulut Hitam ($1.60) to give it a pleasant sweetness. The Bubur Terigu ($1.50) has a generous portion of gula melaka and coconut cream which makes the dessert thick and creamy.  I love the consistency of both the pulut hitam and bubur terigu.

Zheng Xing Mei Shi prepares their Green Bean Soup ($1.50) using traditional methods. Common rue (a bitter herb that carries a special aroma) is just one of the ingredients used to create the comforting soup. My favourite has got to be the Mung Bean Soup ($1.60). Every spoonful has a lavish amount of firm mung beans.

There’s nothing like a sweet bowl of hot, piping dessert to round off your lunch. Note that the shop closes on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
