63 Laksa – $2.50 Bowls of “Sungei Road-Style” Laksa Tucked Away in Ghim Moh Road Market & Food Centre!

$2.50 laksa? That’s right, it exists and it can be found in Ghim Moh Road Market & Food Centre. The stall is called 63 Laksa and word has already gotten around about their super-duper affordable laksa that is brimming with flavour and said to be “Sungei Road-style” laksa. 

So why is it being compared to Sungei Road Laksa? While it has no affiliation to the actual Sungei Road Laksa at Jalan Berseh, it’s because the owner of 63 Laksa, Kelly Ng, adapted his recipe from his grandfather who used to sell laksa along Sungei Road back in the 60s.

I also noticed something interesting as I was watching Kelly prepare my order. After spooning a large serving of laksa broth into the bowl, he proceeded to pour it back into the large vat and repeated it a couple more times. He explained that it’s because he doesn’t keep the broth boiling because of the presence of coconut milk, and it also warms up the porcelain bowl the laksa is served in. 

They do have a larger serving ($4.20) but it’s only available in their takeaway containers (dabao-ing the $2.50 portion would increase the price by $0.20). There’s also mackerel otah at $1.30 each!

Some of the best dishes are kept simple and the laksa here is 100% that. The quaint porcelain bowl was filled to the brim with laksa broth and noodles that have been cut into smaller strands so that you can easily spoon up all the good stuff in one go. Mixed in with the noods were beansprouts and strips of fishcake.

If you opt for your laksa to be spicy and with hum (cockles), the hum and a dollop of sambal chilli would be added to the bowl as the final touch. The little morsels of hum were pleasantly chewy and rather plump. They were plenty briny, juicy and definitely brightened up the simple bowl of laksa.

But the best part had to be slurping up the laksa broth. It was rather refreshing yet flavourful at the same time so you can easily go through the whole bowl without having to cleanse your palate. There was a light coconut milk fragrance along with a hint of spice. But once you mix in the sambal chilli on the side, it’s a whole different tasting experience. The heat wasn’t as intense as I thought it would be though, so if you like your food spicy, go for the “more chilli” option.

63 Laksa’s fare will definitely appeal to people from all walks of life – from those who can’t handle spicy food to those who enjoy the heat, from the young to the old. Even the bigger portion is still rather affordable so it’s definitely worth a visit!
