There’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of warm porridge on a rainy day. As I was trudging through the heavy downpour, I chanced upon Jia Xiang Wei 家乡味 Fish Soup in a quiet Serangoon coffee shop.

The 5-year-old stall by The Fat Chef has been serving up seafood soups and zi-char style dishes.

I was initially excited to order their Claypot Seafood Porridge, only to find out they’ve discontinued the seasonal item for now. I decided to go for their equally appetising Seafood Porridge which essentially is a pot of fresh seafood and cooked rice cooked over strong, open flames.

As the rain continued to pour, I was feeling a little cold and was especially eager to tuck into the Seafood Porridge ($6), which had an abundance of prawns, clams, fish slices, and minced pork. The prawns were crunchy and sweet, which went well with the succulent clams and the savoury minced pork. Although my encounters with Teochew-style porridge are few, I felt that the rough broken rice was of the right texture which, together with the sweetness of seafood and the soup’s light flavours, made for a comforting and wholesome meal.

Next, I tried the Vinegar Pig’s Trotter ($8) which promised generous amounts of pork steeped in a solid sauce with strong vinegar hints. Each thick chunk of meat possessed a good meat-to-fat ratio which I found satisfying. The sourness that had permeated the tender meat would sure wake patrons’ senses! Despite not being one for sour dishes, I found the pig’s trotters quite appetising.

Lastly, I tried the Fried Pork Belly ($8) which had a crisp light batter. It was pretty well seasoned.
