Folks who love Serangoon Nasi Padang will be pleased to know that the couple behind the stall is now dishing out their famous nasi padang under a new name at 22 Sin Ming Road — Serangoon BBQ & Curry. Uncle Tan and Auntie Cheong are still serving up yummy BBQ chicken, sotong, ikan selar (yellowtail scad), and a variety of sides and butterfly pea rice.

The couple runs quite the production in the large kitchen space alongside their eldest son, Eugene. Eugene mainly works the front of the house, while his parents grill and fry batches of meat and seafood.serangoonbbq&curry-02

Uncle Tan and Auntie Cheong certainly have a wealth of experience under their belts. They have been cooking nasi padang since 1983, having first learnt the art of cooking it from their Malay neighbours during their kampong days. They were first based in Serangoon before moving to Bishan, after which they sold the business to a loyal customer and made the move to Sin Ming under a new name.

Every ingredient is freshly procured from the markets, and marinated right in their kitchen — from the chicken and seafood, right down to the freshly-plucked butterfly pea flowers used to cook their rice. Each set comes with a main, rice and two side dishes, all of which are on display for patrons to choose from.

The Signature BBQ Chicken Set ($5) is one of their most popular dishes and I could see why based on looks alone. The rattan plate was heaped with quite a large portion of carbs, veggies and protein — certainly worth the price! Sporting a beautiful brown, the boneless chicken thighs had a crispy skin that had been well-marinated with 17 spices.

While it might seem a little clumped together at first sight, the butterfly pea rice had the perfect texture and was very fragrant. The house-made chilli paste was one spicy addition that will leave your taste buds tingling for quite a while. It had an astringent flavour that complemented the meat well.

I also had the Curry Fish Fillet Set ($7) which featured a sizable fish fillet that had been slow-cooked in rempah and coconut milk. The clean-tasting flesh of the fish was a testament to its freshness. I felt that it could have used more curry though, as it started to feel a little dry as I worked my way through it.

Surprisingly, the Mutton Rendang Set ($8) turned out to be my favourite of the lot because I’m usually quite picky with this choice of meat. Sure, it was still a little bit gamey but it didn’t completely overwhelm my taste buds, or eclipse the rest of the flavours present. I also really enjoyed how tender it was and the sauce had the right balance of spicy and savoury notes.

A side well-deserving of the spotlight was the thick pieces of Otak-Otak ($2), crafted according to an authentic Muar recipe. The fish paste was stuffed with good-sized chunks of mackerel and jazzed up with an addictive blend of spices. I’m telling you straight up now that one piece is not going to be enough.

Some of the vegetables available are brinjal & lady’s fingers, curry vegetables, achar, and sambal kangkong. I appreciated how the sauces didn’t completely mask the natural taste of the veggies, making everything very well-balanced.

The nasi padang really met my expectations. Plus, with the portions they dole out for each set, it’s no doubt a tasty and affordable lunch to indulge in.
