SBCD Korean Tofu House

How many of you enjoy bubbling stews paired with a fluffy, warm bowl of rice? That is one of the most comforting food combinations in my opinion, especially on a rainy day. Mhhmmm doesn’t it make you feel like you’re in love? Well, SBCD Korean Tofu House at Tanjong Pagar Centre specialises in giving you that incredible experience, with their comforting tofu stews. Lovers of seafood might appreciate their Assorted Soontofu Stew ($19.90). As the name suggests, the highlight was unquestionably the freshly made blocks of wobbly tofu. Another recommendation would be the Spicy BBQ Pork ($25.90), which features a generous pile of sliced pork laying atop a bed of marinated onions. It was so delicious that we couldn’t stop eating even though we were already stuffed.

Botanist

Hey hey hey, Pacamara fans! Have you heard of the new Botanist Cafe by the same team behind your favourite cafe? Please don’t get the wrong idea about the cafe because of its name; it’s not a place solely for vegetarians. If you are heading there anytime soon, the Baked Egg ($19) was egg-cellent. A hearty tomato relish dish packed with chorizo iberico, bacon, baby spinach, feta cheese and an egg arrived in a little metal pot, along with 3 slices of crunchy toasts. Oh, my heart is melting as I’m thinking of it… And needless to say, getting your caffeine fix at Botanist is a duh. After all, their coffee is one of the best we’ve tried.

Uncle Chicken Rice

Does the name – Sin Kee Famous Cantonese Chicken Rice located at the defunct Margaret Drive Hawker Centre ring a bell? The owner’s son, Niven, opened an air-conditioned eatery along Havelock serving chicken rice and more dishes! It just keeps getting better hor? Uncle Chicken Rice makes things so simple, which is always a plus point! They’ve got menus for 1 pax ($4.30), 2 pax ($16.80/$20.80), 3 pax ($24.80/$32.80 ) or 4pax ($32.80/$42.80). Obviously, don’t miss out on the star and choose between poached chicken and soya sauce chicken, or both! Just as important as the protein, the fluffy rice is mildly fragrant and not too greasy. To top it off, the popular ginger dip and special blended spicy chilli sauce make it all the more shiok!

Muffles

It’s not easy to start up a successful dessert store in a hawker stall space, but ex 5-star hotel pastry chef, May Chow has done it. She has previously honed her baking skills at Mandarin Orchard and Resorts World Sentosa, so you can be sure that her wonderful bakes would almost be on par with what you can get at some hotels. You can taste her passion for baking through signature items such as the Pandan Ogura Cake ($1.50). Baked using the chiffon cake method, the meringue is beaten till soft peaks and mixed with fresh pandan juice. The batter is steam-baked at a low temperature till the cake turns soft and moist. It’s amazing that no baking powder is added! Furthermore, there are other bakes such as traditional egg tarts ($1.20), apple crumble ($3) and muffins (from $1.50) in various flavours which might appeal to you as well.
