Far-east side fans of Old Airport Road Food Centre’s Western Barbeque no longer need to make the journey there for their old-school Western fare. First established in 1974, the popular stall has recently opened another branch in a coffee shop in Bedok, that is helmed by second-generation hawkers from the same family.

You’ll spy familiar items such as Chicken Chop ($7), Pork Chop ($7) and Sirloin Steak ($12) along with their famed garlic sauce, as well as Fish & Chips ($6.50) and English Breakfast ($6) on their menu. There also seems to be a slight increase in price, but hey, if it saves you the journey, you can’t complain.

One of the most popular items is the Mixed Grill ($12) and it comes with chicken chop, pork chop and lamb chop, slathered with garlic sauce, and sides of crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw, a fried egg and an old-school cream bun.

While there wasn’t much individual marination for the cuts of meat, the garlic sauce provided enough of a flavour boost to complement their natural tastes. It was sweeter than I expected, with bits of garlic added into the mix.

Out of the grilled meats in this platter, the chicken chop stood out the most. It was really tender, and perfectly cooked through, with a little bit of crispiness on its skin.

The pork chop took a dip in terms of expectations, unfortunately. It was pounded to an ideal thickness but was rather tough in texture and a tad dry. Perhaps they’re still adjusting to the new environment as I’ve heard better reviews of the pork chop at their original stall, so give them a little time to iron out the kinks.

The lamb was also on the tougher side and slightly gamey, but still manageable especially with the garlic sauce. There’s nothing that tasty sauce can’t fix!

If you’re in the mood for something fried, I recommend the Chicken Cutlet ($7) which is quite unlike the typical breaded kind you’ll usually find at Western stalls. Rather, it reminded me more of Taiwanese-style fried chicken.

The crispy batter was well-seasoned and gave way to meat as juicy as the chicken chop in the Mixed Grill (love the consistency here!).

Besides the garlic sauce, what sets Western Barbeque apart from other Western stalls is their old-school cream bun, which has been a favourite since their very first days at Old Airport Road. The pillowy bun had a thin layer of cream in the middle and was very much like a cake, making this a mini dessert that can be enjoyed after. It comes in a sealed package which you can just take home.

There wasn’t much to say about the fries, but I did appreciate how their coleslaw didn’t have too much mayonnaise so it wasn’t very artificial-tasting.

Western Barbeque is definitely not your average old-school Western stall and I can picture fans and residents forming quite the crowd once word gets around!
