Day 1

Dear Diary,

I remember how Grandma used to cook yummy dishes for me to bring to school. She would pack them in pretty tingkat and pass it to me at the school gate. Stir-fried Cai Xin, Braised Egg with Tau Kwa and Sweet Sour Chicken were just some of her signatures. Although Grandma did it partly to save money, her packed food tasted so much better than “outside food”! I miss her cooking, the familiar flavours, and more importantly, the ease of mind knowing that my meals are taken care of. These days, I fret over what to have for dinner after a tiring day of work. It’s quite a headache, to be honest. I was introduced to Best Catering today, and it sounds like a life-saver. Best Catering caters weekday dinners for people who simply can’t find time to cook. Day 2

Dear Diary,

Today, Miranda from work came over to have dinner and we had our meal from Best Catering. True to their words, the food came packed in a tingkat. We dug into the four different dishes — Szechuan Chicken, Beancurd with Prawn, Mei Cai with Meat and Mixed Vegetable. We tried a bit of everything, wary at first, since it was our first time having catered food for dinner. Well, we were pleasantly surprised at how great everything tasted! The dishes were not overly salty or greasy, which was a relief! I like how the meat was especially tender, while the vegetables were fresh and washed thoroughly. One of the things I fear the most about buying food from zhap chai png stalls is finding sand in my vegetables. My favourite item has got to be the Mei Cai with Meat! It reminded me of home, and of Grandma. The dinner plan from Best Catering seemed to be off to a promising start!

Day 3

Dear Diary,

The boyfriend and I had a simple dinner from Best Catering tonight. It’s ‘Tingkat Woohoo Wednesday!’ where customers are surprised with a special menu — white rice is swopped to an alternative carb, and the soup is replaced with a dessert. We had Beijing Cabbage, Curry Chicken and two servings of Hokkien Mee topped with Round Vege Fishcake. It was slightly peculiar not going out for dinner, and staying home with home cooked food. The Curry Chicken was so comforting. Having Hokkien Mee as part of catered food was quite new to us. The noodles were dark and firm, with the sweet sauce making it appetising and easy to wolf down. It was a refreshing change, and I’m glad that Best Catering is offering more choices of carbs instead of sticking to just plain white rice. Having a fuss-free date every once in awhile actually felt good!

Day 4

Dear Diary,

I was running around all day and didn’t even a chance to sit down for a proper meal! I was absolutely starving and hoped that dinner was going to be especially hearty. So when the tingkat meal came with chunky BBQ Chicken Chop, I was over the moon! The thick slab of grilled chicken was quite tender and tasty, with a nicely-done BBQ sauce. The other dishes such as Bean Sprouts, Fried Egg with Crab Bit and Assam Fish were great too. I thought that their Assam Fish was well-balanced in taste — not too sour and not intolerably spicy!

Day 5

Dear Diary,

Sorry that I haven’t updated in awhile. Today was the tenth and the last day of the tingkat meal delivery. I am feeling quite lost and daunted. After today, I have to start fretting over what to eat for weekday dinners again! Having not to worry about my meals was pure bliss, plus the homey and nutritious cooking by Best Catering was a welcomed bonus! I had Sweet and Sour fish, Fried Dumplings, Sour Chicken and Stir-Fried Vegetables for dinner today. The two servings of protein (fish and chicken) felt especially luxurious for a weekday dinner, and was a great conclusion to my tingkat meal delivery trial… 🙁 Best Catering has shown repeatedly that catered food can be fantastic as well. The sweet and sour fish, in particular, whetted my appetite and I gobbled down all the dumplings in one go! Best Catering’s delivery wasn’t just convenient, but the food was yummy and superseded all expectations. I guess there’s only one thing left to do now… Time to sign up for their tingkat meal plan for the next few months at least!
