There’s a new Hokkien mee stall in town! Or more specifically, in the east, just a short walk away from Kaki Bukit MRT. Located in Tong Yuan Eating House, Chuan Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee fries up hearty plates of hokkien mee — perfect for lunch or a great dinner.

The month-old stall ensures that all their ingredients are of the freshest quality, with the boss himself starting work from as early as 2am. The boss single-handedly preps everything from the stock and prawns, to the house-made chilli.

You can opt for either the $5 or $8 portion and add on more toppings of prawn, sotong and pork belly at $2 each. You can even request for them to add on pork lard and, as you can see, the friendly staff were pretty generous! Upon ordering, you’ll receive a buzzer that will let you know once your food’s ready.

I got the $5 plate and it was a rather generous portion of yellow noodles and beehoon, pork belly pieces, sotong, three prawns, and a mini-mountain of fried pork lard served with a side of their house-made sambal chilli. Squeeze the lime over the hokkien mee and you’re all set.

The Hokkien mee was fairly fragrant, and it was on the slightly dry side. While I wish the presence of wok hei was a lot stronger, the noodle mix was well-infused with the flavourful stock that gave it quite a boost in umami. But the highlight for me has to be the potency of their chilli. The amount given on the side looked harmless but beware, the spiciness will set your tastebuds aflame!

The prawns were fresh and springy with a bit of crunch, which can be attributed to the boss’ commitment to using only fresh ingredients. There were only two pieces of sotong which was a tad sad but the pork belly bits were quite plentiful. The fried pork lard pieces were pleasantly crunchy and added that sinful oomph to the dish.

With a decent plate of hokkien mee plus fast and impeccable service, this is a pretty good place to stop by for residents in the area. They’re also planning to expand onto food delivery platforms with food and drink bundles, so do look forward to that!
