While the traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival remain unchanged, times of celebration have evolved and adapted in new and exciting ways. One of them is the ever-popular mooncakes that we indulge in with our family and friends, with innovative flavours constantly churned out to enthrall and captivate. FYRE Singapore is one of the leading names in crafting unconventional, festive products and this year, they are bringing a taste of Japan to you with their series of traditional baked, teochew flaky and handcrafted snowskin mooncakes.

Having spent the last year literally grounded, most Singaporeans would want to travel to Japan the minute the borders are open. And when we think of Japan, the very first thing that comes to mind might just be cherry blossoms aka sakura. FYRE Singapore has dedicated ample time to research and development, and has proudly rolled out Singapore’s only line of Japanese-themed mooncakes in both baked and snowskin variations.

The Sakura Cherry Blossom Lychee Mooncake ($88.80) tastes even better than it sounds. The team at FYRE Singapore slow-bakes each handcrafted mooncake in a traditional oven with lychee wood under low heat to infuse the heady fragrance of lychee and floral scent of cherry blossoms into the pastry.

There’s no such thing as too much lychee here; the mooncake is further smoked with more lychee wood to accentuate its distinctive scent. One bite of the baked treat flooded my taste buds with a gentle lychee flavour. The recipe calls for a low use of sugar, but the natural sweetness from the fruit itself was plenty for even a massive sweet-tooth like me. Among the baked mooncakes, the sweet-savoury contrast of the Sakura Cherry Blossom Lychee Single Yolk ($108.80) was my favourite.

Durian enthusiasts will no doubt fall head over heels for the Mao Shan Wang Snowskin series. Dyed in gorgeous shades of pink, the Sakura Cherry Blossom Lychee Black Gold Mao Shan Wang ($148.80) is delicately handcrafted using top-of-the-line ingredients such as 100% natural sakura and lychee extract and pure mao shan wang durian flesh.

Even before being split open, you can already catch whiffs of the intoxicating mao shan wang, and a hint of lychee. Decadently creamy and rich, this luscious treat promises a luxurious mouthfeel that will keep you coming back for more. For pure durian goodness, the ethereal lilac-hued 100% Black Gold Mao Shan Wang ($118.80) boasts an incredibly rich and fresh durian paste.
