Whenever I travel to the West, it’s always for good food. I received a recommendation from a relative, and proceeded to check it out. After a long journey from the North-East, I finally arrived at Hani Food Stall — a hawker stall that sells local favourites such as lontong, mee rebus, nasi lemak, etc. Hani Food Stall was established in the 1970s. It was originally located at Alexandra Terrace, before it moved to West Coast Market Square in 1981. The stall is currently manned by Mr Zairuddin and his siblings(the second-generation), who continue to preserve their parents’ lovely recipes.

I love how Malay cuisine incorporates a variety of spices, thus delivering characteristically piquant and rich flavours. I love Malay food, but I have even more love for mee rebus because I can’t get enough of its robust gravy.

The Mee Rebus which comes in a big serving, costs only $2.80! That made my wallet, and me, very happy.

The gravy is the most important component in a bowl of mee rebus. It makes or breaks, the dish. The gravy here was thickened to the right consistency and was rich in flavour. I liked how the al dente noodles didn’t become mushy even after sitting in the gravy for about 15 minutes(the time I took to finish it). The fried golden shallots added a lovely aroma, and crunch, while the green chillies kept the dish refreshing with an occasional spicy kick. Each mouthful brought a smile to my face. Spoon in some freshly made sambal chilli to spice things up, if you’ll like.

I’ve had average-tasting lontong far too many times. The curry is either too sweet, or the rice cakes are too crumbly and powdery. Well, I’m happy to report that the Lontong ($2.80) at Hani Food Stall was really delicious. Don’t be fooled by the plain-looking curry. The taste of coconut was strong, yet the entire dish did not get jelak. The coconut flakes (serunding) were extremely fragrant. I was told that the making of the coconut flakes is very laborious as it takes about three hours to make them! The end product is definitely worth all that effort. I’m so glad to have found nice lontong!

Hani Food stall most certainly warrants a second visit. The staff are really friendly too! If you’re a big fan of mee rebus and lontong, you should definitely pop by.
