Sitting on the second floor of Parklane Shopping Mall is a month-old eatery, House of Thai – Boat Noodle, selling Thai Boat Noodles, Thai-style Grilled Pork Skewers and Papaya Salads.

As you step into the Cafe, expect to be greeted by a flush of pink interior, neon signs and unicorn soft toys on cushioned seats.

As I scanned the menu, what caught my eye was their Thai Beef Boat Noodle ($6). My decision was also affirmed by the owner who shared that the boat noodles are their bestsellers.

For $6, this bowl had a rather generous amount of toppings. Think beef balls, tripe, beef slices, beef brisket, bean sprouts and even sliced radish. Diving straight for a spoonful of the broth, I was hit by a wave of saltiness. The beefy flavours came a little later. Looking past the saltiness, the broth was flavourful and my noodles had soaked up the goodness well.

Of the noodle choices available, I opted for the standard Thai rice noodles. Other options include Yellow Mee, Bee Hoon, Green Spinach Noodle and White Rice. My noods were well cooked and having it alone without any toppings or soup was just right, since it was already packed with savoury notes.

Now, moving on to the myriad of ingredients sitting on the top of the bowl. The beef slices were on the thicker side, making them a little tougher to bite through. The bite-sized pieces of tripe weren’t the freshest either. The small chunks of beef brisket, on the other hand, melted in my mouth immediately while the meat tore apart easily. The butteriness of the fat coated my tongue, and the acidity from the splash of fish sauce helped to cut through it.

I was quite excited to take a bite of the radish that was brown through and through. Having been simmered in the soup, the radish was soft and oozing with meaty flavours. That, together with the natural sweetness of the vegetable made it quite tasty.

The Thai-style Grilled Pork Skewers ($8), better known as Moo Ping to many, are served in a set of four here. The pork was well marinated, and flavourful. While the meat was tender, my only gripe would be how it lacked a nice char and smokiness. The skewers are served with a side of Sweet Chilli Sauce.

Besides these dishes, House of Thai – Boat Noodle also offers Boat Noodle Hotpot ($15) with the option of Pork or Beef broth, for bigger groups. They also have the classic Papaya Salad ($10) for those looking for a refreshing, tangy side to pair with the mains.

While this is located a little further from Dhoby Ghaut MRT, it’s quite a good spot for an affordable meal near the heart of town!
