What will be the first local food that you want to eat when you return from an overseas holiday? Is it chilli crab? Bak Chor Mee? Satay? For me, the answer is always the same. I need a plate of CHICKEN RICE. And especially during this humid weather, pairing with Coke is sure to delight!

Being a hainanese, chicken rice is part and parcel of my life. My uncle used to run a chicken rice stall and even though he has retired now, he still cooks chicken rice once in a while whenever we have family gathering. But it is not just a normal plate of chicken rice, he only uses kampong chicken to do it.

Every time when I come back from a holiday, I would always go for chicken rice. And I would always visit Kampong Chicken Rice in Upper Thomson because it’s so near to my house and serves considerably good kampong chicken.

The yellow skin kampong chickens are different and its more distinctive features are skinny legs and leaner bodies. They are allowed to run free and corn fed, hence they have less fat and are healthier for consumption.

So how did this kampong chicken fare? Well, the meat is definitely not as fatty. It is leaner but very tender. It feels a lot healthier since there are less fat. Honestly, I won’t mind eating the breast meat too as it is tender. Even though the rice is not as great compare to others, but it matches perfectly with the chicken. They do offal well too.

What seals the deal is the kicky chilli sauce, which is properly thick and spicy. We also ordered a plate of fried tofu and bean sprouts to share. Of course, my plate of chicken rice goes better with a can of ice-cold Coke light or Coke zero.
