No-frills, simple and good old nasi lemak is what Mount Faber Nasi Lemak offers. Having been around for over 45 years, Mount Faber Nasi Lemak is still going strong. Situated at Kreta Ayer Road where modernity and traditions intersect, Mount Faber Nasi Lemak is right where it should be.

I found out about this place as the cab I was in zoomed past it. The huge red sign board caught my eye and got me thinking. “We’ve always had Punggol Nasi Lemak, but not Mount Faber Nasi Lemak. So why not give this a try too!” I came with high hopes and expectations since it’s been around for so long, and I would say that… We have to learn to manage our expectations and have hope for the future at the same time.

I got Set A ($3) and Set C ($5) on the menu. A glass of lime juice can be added on to the sets for $1, but I requested to not have it as I didn’t need a drink.

Set A consists of economic bee hoon, fried fish fillet and a chicken wing. As the portion of bee hoon was way out of proportion for the few ingredients that it had, I requested to add on a piece of Otah ($1.00), since they are also known for their otah.

I was sad to find that the bee hoon served was lukewarm and the chicken wing was tough because it had turned cold. Although it is understandable as to why the food was lukewarm because I went at a non-peak hour(as compared to  lunchtime when the food should probably be fresh and piping hot). Despite that, the bee hoon was still all right, albeit a little too bland for my liking.

The saving grace for Set A that afternoon was the fried fish fillet. It was still crunchy, warm and fragrant. Perhaps it came from the kitchen just a while ago as the last batch of ingredients for the lunch hour. This could be the usual standard that you’d get if you are part of the lunch crowd. The other item that I was glad to have was the otah. It was spicy, flavourful and slightly warm too! The otah was made to the right thickness and it was firm. If I were to come back again, this would be something that I must have in my order!

Set C, on the other hand, was so much better. The backbone of every nasi lemak is their “nasi” or rice. It was fragrant with hints of coconut and pandan, but I wished that it was just a little more fragrant! Pair the rice with the classic toppings such as chilli, ikan billis and peanuts and you have yourself a tasty and crunchy mouthful.

In Set C, there is a huge drumstick, a small kuning fish, and long beans. The drumstick looked SO GOOD, but disappointed with its coldness and toughness. I really hope to be able to try their food when it’s fresh and piping hot!

The kuning fish was pretty small in comparison to the drumstick, but it was not as tough. I’ve never been a fan of this fish as I absolutely detest the process of picking the bones of this fish out. However, this was not too much of a chore as the bones and flesh came apart quite easily. Thank God. It was not too dry as well, and I think that they managed to keep the moisture of the fish in quite well even though it was deep-fried.

The other happy note about Set C is the garlic fried long beans. It was superb and surprisingly good for a nasi lemak stall. The long beans had a strong garlicky taste and it was very well coated in its sauce. If I were to build my own nasi lemak bowl, this would be in it along with the otah!

All in all, I could see why their brand could withstand the test of time. Although I have not tried everything on the menu, I still think that there is potential for the food to be really good despite the lukewarmness that I encountered. It would be at the back of my head as one of the potential supper spots in Singapore because it opens till 2:30 am!
