Northpoint City – 100+ Eateries That Will Make Yishun Great Again!

There’s a huge reason why you should – the swanky new Northpoint City. The mall, which is the largest mall in the North, houses over 100 dining outlets running the range from exciting international cuisine to familiar local favourites, the best of Eastern and Western flavours can all be found under one giant roof. After all, if Yishun cannot win over your heart, it can at least win over your stomach.

1. Gyoza-ya

This outlet, which is the gyoza specialist’s first store in the North, serves up variants of juicy pan-fried dumplings that include vegetable, chicken curry, and adzuki beans. But we’d recommend sticking to their Pork Gyoza ($4.80), which comes with a bold claim of being “rated #1 gyoza in Singapore”. While we cannot attest to their claim (that’s an argument for later), what was clear was that the dumplings were certainly plump and juicy, neatly encased within a thin handmade dough.

For a decadent treat, opt for the pan-fried dumpling with Mentaiko Miso ($8.80). Crispy gyozas are slathered with a blanket of saucy goodness best enjoyed with some rice. Those looking for something more substantial can choose from their extensive sushi options such as Aburi Foie Gras ($4) and Spicy Tuna Gunkan ($1.20).

Also recommended is the Jya Jya Men ($6.80), which is their take on a dry ban mian. For best results, stir in vinegar, chilli oil, and a soft-boiled egg for a slurp-worthy dish.

2. Pizza Maru

Let’s face it: molten cheese has a certain pull factor. And when combined with pizza, the result is a winning combination no one can resist. Pizza Maru is the latest Korean brand to have made its way to our shores.

It then comes as no surprise that the Real BBQ Chicago ($26.80) is a crowd (and social media) favourite. Double mozzarella cheese, string cheese, and cream cheese mousse are all stuffed within a black rice dough to give it those satisfying cheese pull strands. Usual suspects of chicken chunks, roasted onion, mushroom, tomato, potato, and bbq sauce find their way onto this impressive pizza, alongside unusual ingredients such as honey, flaked almonds, and icing sugar. The sweet-savoury pairing might sound weird, but it works, very much like the sweet-salty honey butter flavour.

The menu is filled with uncanny pairings that work. Try the sweet-spicy Mango Ocean ($19.80/ 9”), which comes with shrimp, scallop, squid, onion, mushroom, black olive, broccoli, mozzarella cheese, mango, pilaf sauce, and spicy budak sauce assembled on a green tea dough. Or swop out the usual pizza crust with their Gold Edge ($3.20/9”), where sweet potato mousse and cheese are blended into the crust.

Classic Korean dishes are also reimagined in modern ways. Take the Spam Tower ($12.80) which is an impressive creation of a deconstructed bibimbap, for example. Think chicken spam, fried kimchi, bell pepper, onion, cabbage, mushroom, egg, seaweed, potato crisp, sriracha sauce, and parmesan cheese. Also, don’t miss their Fried Chicken with Onion Tartar ($16.80 for 6pcs), Supa Hot Dak Gangjeong ($16.80 for 6pcs), and selection of bingsu which includes Mudcrack ($9.90) and My Only Sunshine ($11.90).

3. PatBingSoo Korean Dining House

Get your appetite and camera ready before popping by. The food at PatBingSoo Korean Dining House will taste as good as they look. Like us, you might be tempted to start off your meal with the Sinsa Patbingsoo ($15.90), with red bean, nata de coco, cornflakes, almond, and vanilla ice cream hidden within a rockmelon. But resist the temptation, at least till the end of the meal.

Signature items include the family-friendly Budae Jjigae ($35.90) with pork or beef, sausages, spam, fish cake, rice cake, beans, tofu, kimchi, ramyeon, egg, and fresh vegetables simmered in a mild-spicy broth, and the Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice ($11.50) with your choice of pork or beef.

Our favourite was the Tteokbokki Jjigae ($35.90 with pork or beef, $38.90 with mussels), which features a colourful selection of taro, pumpkin, cheese, and plain rice cakes, in addition to spam, egg, fish cake, sausage, and mushroom. Equally impressive was the Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs ($38.90). Wait patiently for the generous pool of cheddar and mozzarella cheese to melt before rolling it around your choice of spicy or non-spicy pork ribs.

4. Big Fish Small Fish

It is getting harder to contain the popularity of Big Fish Small Fish. What started out as a casual eatery at the Seed@Social Innovation Park, better known as the Punggol container cafe, has now opened a second outlet in Yishun. You won’t go wrong with their Fish & Crisps (yes, you read it right), where fillets of fish are served with fresh potato crisps. Popular choices include the Dory ($7.90) and Seabass ($11.90), but our favourite had got to be the Salmon ($12.90) that was encased in a light, golden batter.

Equally addictive was their Shishamo ($8.90), and Sandwich & Crisps (from $8.90), where their signature fillets are sandwiched between herb bread.

Choosing what to eat might be easy, but choosing what sauce to accompany those addictively crunchy crisps is the hard part. There’s chilli, ketchup, cheese, curry mayo, and XO mayo. They are all good, but none will have you licking your fingers like the mozzarella cheese sauce ($2.50).

5. Guzman Y Gomez

From the bright colours of fresh ingredients to the bold flavours of meat and spices, Mexican cuisine has got everything to put a smile on your face.

It is hard to go wrong with their best-selling Burrito, which comes loaded with rice, jack cheese, black beans, salsa, and your choice of filling all rolled snugly in a flour tortilla ($10.90 for regular). Other choices include Burrito Bowls ($10.90), Nachos ($13.50), Tacos ($11.50 for 3pcs), and Salads ($12.50).

We particularly liked the slow-roasted pulled pork marinated with Pico de Gallo and Tomatillo salsa, and the pan-seared barramundi (additional $1) with light notes of garlic and lime. And no matter what you end up choosing, top it off with a dollop of guacamole ($2 as an add-on, $3 as side serving) for a fresh creamy kick!

6. COLLIN’S

With over 21 outlets islandwide, COLLIN’S is known for its quality Western grub.

The Charcoal Grilled Tender Octopus Leg ($25.90) served with mushroom and potato gratin and garlic aioli was delightfully tender, and the Charcoal Grilled Teriyaki Pork Belly ($16.90) was polished off in minutes, with its sweet granny smith applesauce helping to cut through the grease.

While they all retained a smoky fragrance, it comes through best in the Charcoal Grilled Pork Ribs ($35.90 for full slab), thanks to a special oven that they utilise. Other crowd favourites include the Grilled Chicken Chop ($11.50) with spaghetti aglio olio, corn cob, mesclun salad, and black pepper sauce, and the Black Angus Sirloin Steak ($17.90, 200 gm).
