As I approached the stall in the corner of West Plaza Pasir Ris’ Koufu, I was greeted by a queue at Raden Lina Nasi Padang & Ayam Penyet. The wait wasn’t long though and I quickly found myself staring at a myriad of dishes in front of me.

Raden Lina Nasi Padang - nasi ambeng

I opted for their signature Nasi Ambeng ($8) — Nasi Padang on a platter — as recommended by the staff. A mountain of fluffy rice was surrounded by an array of dishes, fixed for this set in particular. Together with a huge piece of Ayam Masak Lemak, vegetables, protein, and carbs filled the plate.

The Ayam Masak Lemak was bursting with flavour and the sauce, which had a strong coconut taste and hints of spices, got me hooked. The sauce was undeniably the saving grace of this dish, since the chicken itself was dry and tough. The Paru (cow’s lungs) was chewy and did not have a strong beefy taste unlike what I had expected, but I can see why this would be an acquired taste.

The option to have your Nasi Ambeng with their beef rendang ($8) or mutton rendang ($9) is also available.

Their Ayam Penyet ($6.50), another signature item, was something I could not pass up on. The chicken was juicier and more tender compared to the one I had in my Nasi Ambeng. Every bite was complemented by a nice crunch from the golden brown chicken skin as well.

They sure were generous with their fragrant sambal which went hand in hand with the sweetness of the kecap manis drizzled on top of the chicken.

Although their unsuspecting bowl of Lontong ($4) didn’t look like a stunner, I found myself going back for more after every spoonful. As someone who likes her food slightly sweeter, more than it is spicy, this was perfect for me. The cabbage soaked up all the goodness from the soup and was extremely soft. The chilli that was slathered all over the vegetables sure gave it that extra spicy kick!
