“Rasa Sayang Western Food 重出江湖了(makes a comeback)!” This was the first thought that came to my mind when I read about how it has been missed by many who shared that it was a large part of their childhood/adolescent years. The re-opening of the western food stall is certainly great news for those that hold it in a special place in their hearts. I was also secretly excited to jump on the bandwagon to try it!

Some items recommended by my boss were the Chicken Chop ($6.50), Fish and Chips ($6.50) and Sirloin Steak ($10.90).

All three mains had the same side dishes — baked beans, coleslaw, french fries and a huge piece of garlic bread. There is no option to choose any other side dishes and I believe that it is the same for all other dishes too. These are the usual side dishes that old school Western food stalls usually give and I love how they stayed true to it. I was actually quite happy that they didn’t make me choose the side dishes because I always find it difficult to decide.

There was really nothing too unique about the side dishes. I was a little sad that the garlic bread was not fully toasted, and was only crispy around the edges.

First up, the Chicken Chop. I think that this was a very beautifully balanced chicken chop. It was not only tender and juicy, but it also had a charred and smoky flavour! I was pleasantly surprised by how well executed it was.

The chicken chop is paired with a mushroom sauce that had actual pieces of mushroom! It was well concocted, and not too salty or too sweet. The chicken chop might look a little smaller as compared to what you might get from other places these days, but can we just look at how thick it is! It’s not every day that you’ll get to find a thick piece of tender chicken chop in your neighbourhood (unless you stay in AMK).

Next, we have Fish and Chips. It was one that I was pleasantly surprised by too. Again, I was weary and cautious when approaching it because I was really worried that the fish fillet would have a fishy smell. Well, this passed the taste test with flying colours! It didn’t have the fishy smell and it was really well fried as it was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Remember to squeeze the lemon over for an extra sour kick! The tartar sauce, which was drizzled on the side, was a little too watery in my opinion, but it was still a good pairing as the sauce was light and didn’t overpower the taste of the fish fillet.

Last but not least, Sirloin Steak! I got the steak in medium-well doneness. A side story: I was a little stunned when the stall assistant asked me in Mandarin what doneness I’d like to have. I replied in English, “Medium-well”. So here goes, medium-well in Chinese is 七分熟 (qi fen shou). Just in case you need this for future reference. Now back to the review.

I don’t have a lot of experience in eating steak, but I know what a good steak tastes like. And I can safely say that this is a good steak. They got the doneness quite on point and I believe that it comes with decades of experience.

The steak was juicy, and it had the beef juices locked in too! If you’re on a budget but want a good steak, this is a good place to visit.

All in all, I love how these huge portions are priced very reasonably, and is affordable for everyone, especially the youths from schools in the area. It is no wonder why many are so fond of this place!

If you’ll like to have a taste of this, do come and queue early. They will be closed for a break if they are sold out for lunch and will re-open again for dinner. The exact timings are not specified, but it would be good to be there early!
