Finding inexpensive steak to indulge in is always quite the task because you have to make sure you get your money’s worth. Amongst the slew of hawker centres and coffee-shop stalls selling Western food, UNO Beef House is known for their sizzling hot plates of affordable steaks available in different cuts, as well as a variety of classic old-school Western fare.

Located in the ‘hood of Toa Payoh, UNO Beef House has been in business for over a decade and gained a cult following amongst residents and old-time fans. The family-run business was passed down from father to son and has always remained in the heartlands even after having to shift locations from time to time.

Besides their black pepper steaks which are available in 3 cuts — sirloin ($14), ribeye ($16) and tenderloin ($19) — popular choices include classics such as Black Pepper Chicken Chop ($7.50), Pork Chop ($7.50), Fish & Chips ($8), Fried Rice with Chicken Wing ($6.10), and Mix Grill ($13) which features chicken chop, pork chop, bacon, ham and eggs. Prices have seen a slight hike since their early days, but that’s not a surprise at all.

I decided to get the Black Pepper Sirloin Steak ($14) and the hot plate arrived with a large slab of beef sizzling in black pepper sauce, baked beans, half a tomato and a fried mashed potato ball. The aroma emitting from the piping hot steak was as enticing as its presentation. Cutting into the medium-rare meat was a breeze and while it wasn’t the most tender steak I’ve ever had, there was plenty of juiciness and fat.

The black pepper sauce was on the bland side and I do wish it was more peppery; not to mention more in quantity to go with the steak. What piqued my interest, however, was the fried mashed potato ball instead of your usual french fries. The thin crisp outer layer gave way to buttery, well-seasoned mashed potato that was slightly chunky.

While the Chicken Chop ($7.50) could stand to be slightly more tender, it was seasoned to perfection and the natural flavours of the chicken weren’t completely masked. It would have been even better if they were more heavy-handed with the savoury brown sauce. The fries were beautifully crisp and other sides included baked beans and coleslaw.

Chicken wing fans shouldn’t miss out on their Chicken Wing Set ($7.50). One of the more popular options apart from the steak sets, these fried babies are the epitome of old-school Western food. The crunchy batter was simply seasoned, but made for a good match with the chicken meat.

Sadly, I was told by the owner of UNO Beef House that they would be making a switch in location once again sometime during June this year. While the exact address isn’t confirmed yet, he assured me that he intends to find a new space that’s still within the Toa Payoh heartlands so be sure to head down to get your fill of affordable Western fare while you still can!
