This underrated local dish is said to be created by Teochew immigrants who fused the peanut gravy that comes with Malaysian satay with common Chinese ingredients such as pork liver, cuttlefish, and rice vermicelli to make a delectable combination.

Ng learnt his craft as an apprentice under the tutelage an old hawker. He continued to tweak and perfect his satay bee hoon recipe, which eventually led him to receiving the Michelin Bib Gourmand award in 2018. Ng makes his peanut gravy from scratch by laboriously roasting peanuts, removing their skins, and grinding the nuts before boiling everything down with other spices to create the gravy.

Ng’s satay beehoon is only available from late afternoon till midnight. In the morning and afternoon, Ng’s nephew sells Teochew porridge in the same stall. Hence, don’t be confused when you see other dishes on the menu, as Ng only sells his one and only signature satay bee hoon!

The stall sells satay bee hoon in 3 sizes ($3, $4, and $5). I ordered the smallest plate ($3), and was shocked by the great mountain of sauce that blanketed the ingredients! The dish comes with tau pok, pork slices, pork liver, bean sprouts, and kang kong. You can choose the type of noodles(yellow egg noodles, thin bee hoon or both) for your satay bee hoon.

I went for the classic thin bee hoon, which saw the rich peanut sauce clinging to each noodle strand. It was a joy to slurp up the nutty and sweet gravy! I found the pork slices and liver tender and juicy, but it took some poking around to fish out these delectable pieces. I had only wished that cuttlefish was added to the dish for more crunch.

So, if you’re looking for a delicious plate of satay bee hoon, head over to Shi Wei Da 食为大. I know I will be back!
