Good Malay food is naturally hard to find in Fortune Centre, where most patrons and shop owners are Chinese. That’s why when I found out about Syam Corners Muslim Food, I was ecstatic. Syam Corners was where you could always find me during my lunch breaks when I was still in school. Whenever the makcik called me “sayang”, I get butterflies in my stomach. It’s safe to say that Syam Corners will always hold a dear spot in my heart. I love nasi padang, the Malay version of my Chinese favourite mixed vegetable rice.

Syams Corner is a humble, family-operated restaurant. You will see both the young and old working the counter, and running up and down to get the dishes prepared. A plate of rice with a big chicken drumstick, sotong, and my favourite sambal goreng tempeh tofu and long beans only costs $5.80! Everyone knows that nasi padang is more expensive than other Malay dishes, but Syams Corner’s is absolutely affordable!

When I asked Cik for a recommendation, she gave me this sweet and spicy chicken drumstick. She even said that it was her favourite of all the meat dishes that she cooks! The biting spiciness of the sambal was well masked by the honey that coated the chicken. So yummy with just mouthfuls of plain rice!

While most things are pretty outstanding here, the star is undeniably the belacan. The housemade belacan will make you go “sssst” and “ahhh”. If you’re not good with spicy food, beware!

Unfortunately, I came too late this time round, and some of my usual orders, like the begedil and curry chicken were already sold out. Make sure you arrive early or you’ll miss out on the favourites! The early bird catches the begedil!
