Helmed by a friendly Taiwanese couple, Want Food Taiwanese Delights is a homey cafe located on the corner of Cross street. When living in Taiwan, or even after they moved to Singapore around 5 years ago, the wife has always loved making home-cooked meals for themselves and their loved ones. After spending some time working in the semiconductor field, she quit her job to start this cosy cafe. Wanting their flavours to be similar to those back home, they try to source their ingredients from Taiwan as much as possible. Components like their pickled vegetables are imported from Taiwan.

What caught my eye instantly were the vintage knick-knacks adorning the corners of the small cafe. Seating options extend outside but are overall quite limited. While the lean menu consists of only 3 mains, the portions are rather generous.

To kick the Taiwanese affair off, I had the Signature Oyster Intestine Mee Sua (Regular $9.90, Small $6.90). One spoonful of it and I was transported right back to the streets of Taiwan. The garlicky soup was just right — neither too diluted nor too starchy. The sourness from the vinegar was not too overpowering, and complemented the vermicelli to the T. What sets this apart is the choice of quality ingredients. I liked how juicy and plump the oysters were, and how clean the large intestines were!

You cannot dine at a Taiwanese eatery without ordering Lu Rou Fan. At Want Food, there are Ala Carte ($7.90) or Bento ($9.90) options, with the latter coming with additional side dishes. Braised overnight for a melt-in-the-mouth texture, the meat soaked up the herbal flavour adequately, creating a very tasty mouthful. I did, however, feel that the meat slices were too small, and the rice to meat ratio was a little off. The pickled vegetables and cucumber were a nice added touch that helped cleanse the palate after a few spoonfuls.

On the side, I ordered the Taiwanese Salty Crispy Chicken ($8.90). There was just enough batter on the chicken, and the seasoning was not overdone. The chicken was also juicy, and it was so addictive that I kept reaching for more.
