角頭台灣早餐店 GATAO Taiwan Breakfast – Taiwan-Centric Stall Opens in People’s Park Centre

Oh Taiwan, how I adore you and your many delicious offerings. I’m always down to devour bowls of lu rou fan (braised pork rice) and oyster mee sua for lunch, but I prefer my breakfast to be on the lighter side. And, the newly-opened 角頭台灣早餐店 GATAO Taiwan Breakfast eatery in People’s Park Centre’s Food City just might have the Taiwanese breakfast fix I’m looking for.

Taiwanese breakfast is known to be heavy on carbs and eggs, so it was no surprise to see that reflected in 角頭台灣早餐店 GATAO Taiwan Breakfast’s menu. They even have egg crepes ($5.90 for ham and egg, $6.90 for tuna egg) and carrot cake sticks ($3)! 

Popping by during lunch? They have classic Taiwanese fare like Fried Chicken Drumlet Rice ($7.90), Minced Pork Rice ($6.90) and Oyster Vermicelli Soup ($5.90).

Since it was still early in the day, the appetising-looking sandwiches were the ones that called out to me. While it might look unassuming, the Pork Chop with Egg Toast ($4.90) was my favourite. Sandwiched between two toasted slices of bread was a simple combination of a relatively thin pork chop, a fried egg and lettuce.

My first bite of the sandwich only caught a bit of the pork chop and my initial thought was that it was well-seasoned but dry. While first impressions might be important, it was still too early to judge and as I worked my way through, my skepticism turned into enthusiasm. The harmony between the pork, egg, mayo and crisp lettuce was superb. The runny egg yolk and mayo elevated the pork chop and that dry first bite became a thing of the past.

The Taiwanese Hamburger ($3.90) seemed to be their take on kong bak pao (braised pork belly steamed bun). Their slab of pork was not as thick as I would have liked but there was still a decent meat-to-fat ratio. I thought they could have afforded to be a little more generous with the sauce to make it a more indulgent meal.

Adding crunch to the fluffy bao were a handful of preserved vegetables and what I thought were fried garlic bits. The latter turned out to be chopped peanuts instead but I felt that fried garlic would have been a better option to tie the ingredients together. The preserved veggies were also a little too overpowering in taste.

There are also great options for the little ones of the family. I quite enjoyed the Hash Brown Tart ($4.90), which was essentially just two crispy hash brown patties wrapped in a nacho cheese-drizzled fried egg layer. It was a good breakfast dish that will please people of all ages.

The beverages they had were just what you would expect of a Taiwan-centric menu: Brown Sugar Milk Tea  ($3.80) and Black Tea ($2.90). I was curious about the Special Taiwan Breakfast Drink ($3) but it was a bit anticlimactic when the milk tea came to me in a bubble-tea like cup. It wasn’t too sweet though, allowing the fragrance of the tea to make itself known.

It would have been nice to see other Taiwanese breakfast classics such as scallion pancakes, flatbread, you tiao (fried dough fritters) and soy milk, but what 角頭台灣早餐店 GATAO Taiwan Breakfast offers is still pretty good. Now, to come back for lunch to taste-test the rice and noodle dishes!
