Finding affordable yet delicious meals in the CBD can be a tall order, especially during the lunch rush hour. Well, if you work in the Tanjong Pagar area, your lunchtime decision making just got slightly easier! Located in Guoco Towers, Ya Lor serves up delicious braised duck rice that wont hurt your wallet!

Ya Lor combines delicious hawker fare with the air-conditioned comfort of a shopping mall, topped off with chic decor! The eatery is actually an offshoot of the famous Sean Kee Duck Rice, which has a huge following and is considered one of the best duck rice stalls in Singapore. Such a prestigious name behind the duck rice; I had high expectations for my meal here!

If you’re feeling extra hungry, the Signature Braised Duck Rice ($6.90) at Ya Lor is the dish for you! The dish comes with half a braised egg, braised beancurd, braised peanuts and beansprouts, in addition to moist and tender duck meat!
All of these was covered in a thick braising sauce, which had a deep richness and sweeter-than-usual finish. The peanuts and beansprouts brought some crunch to the meal, and paired well with the duck. Make sure to grab some sambal chilli, which has a vinegary kick to cut through the richness of the meal!

To be honest, I was not expecting much from the Duck Yellow Noodles ($5.90). After going through the sumptuous duck rice, the noodles just looked plain in comparison. However, something about the simplicity of this dish just works! The secret ingredient is a large serving of fried onions, which brought a lovely crunch and fragrance to the dish. The noodles also did not have any alkaline taste, which is all too common in yellow noodle dishes. My only complaint is that the dish seemed quite small to me. Maybe its my big appetite, but this dish would not be enough for lunch. For a more satisfying meal, I would suggest sticking to the duck rice.

Overall, the tender duck meat and addictive braising sauce is enough to bring me back to Ya Lor, and I can definitely see this becoming a weekly lunch spot if I work in the area!
