Cockle Fried Kway Teow

There is already a snaking queue before the stall even opens. The stall is run by an old couple. The uncle first fries the noodles in a large portion and transfers them to a big bowl. He then takes a small portion back to the wok and fries it with Chinese sausages, cockles, eggs and beansprouts once an order is received. Their fried kway teow has a alluring smoky flavour and the pork lard offers a crunch amongst the soft, slippery kway teow. They also serve White Kway Teow. Initially I thought it is Penang-style fried kway teow, but it is regular kway teow without dark soy sauce.

Da Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice is a stall that sells Hainanese chicken rice but it is way more famous for its fried chicken wings. The stall only opens for business in the early evening and foodies queue for their shatteringly crisp golden brown fried chicken wings which are juicy, tender and well marinated. These chicken wings are certainly worth making a trip down for. They remind me of the old school carona chicken wings. And they taste even better when eaten with the addictive chilli sauce, which not only elevates the flavour of the wings but also gives them a nice spicy twist.

Fang Yuan Satay

Run by a third generation hawker, this stall serves pork and chicken satay made according to the owner’s grandfather’s satay recipe. The mouth-watering pork satay has a nice combination of succulent pork meat and fat. Grilled over charcoal fire, each satay is well marinated, nicely charred and very flavourful. They are also known for their creamy peanut satay sauce, which has a sweet and sour grated pineapple puree to cut through the richness of the meats.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup

This is the first Song Kee fishball noodles I have tasted, when I was still working in Toa Payoh 8 years ago. Each bowl of noodles comes with lots of “liao”, including signature fish dumplings, fish balls, meat balls and fish cakes. While their fishball is nothing to shout about, their fish dumpling with slippery skin and well marinated meat is stellar. I love their al dente mee pok tossed with fragrant pork lard, chilli and vinegar. Every strand of springy noodle is coated in the savoury and spicy sauce which really makes it shine. Some people find it too oily, but I love it!

Sweet Heart Dessert

Round off your meal with some cold desserts from Sweet Heart Dessert. They serve a good variety of hot and cold dessert. One popular dessert you should try is the refreshing ‘Commando Dessert’, which sees a mountain of shaved ice topped with longans, red tea jelly and condensed milk. I thought I can only get this at Changi Village so I am very happy to get it here. They also sell handmade curry puffs if you’re looking for a snack in between meals.
