Local food in a chic and modern setting? Happy Bowl sounds promising already.

I arrived at FOMO, a modern and trendy establishment that resembles a food court. There are several stalls, a bar, and even live soccer screening on match days. I spotted what I came for in a corner, near the entrance — Happy Bowls.

Happy Bowl offers local cuisine such as wanton mee, roast pork rice and century egg porridge in really cute bowls. The owner, Alvin, told me that this idea was inspired by his foodie tendencies — when you want to try a lot of things but don’t have the stomach space for it. I can totally relate.

I ordered the KL & SG Wanton Noodles (the KL version is tossed in a dark sauce while the SG rendition comes with a light sauce, $1.8 each), Cheesy Wantons ($3.9), Salted Egg Yolk Wantons ($3.9) and a Roasted Happy Porky ($2.7).

To be honest, I am a little reserved and don’t have very high expectations when I dine at young eateries offering what seem like contemporary hawker fare.

Thankfully, the wanton noodles at Happy Bowl was pretty decent. The noodles were springy and had a good bite. The sauces were enjoyable as well, though I found their SG version a little bland.

The wantons were extremely crispy, even with the sauces drizzled over. The fillings weren’t quite as generous as I had hoped, but at least, they were tasty.

The cheese sauce was delightful, while the yummy salted egg yolk sauce was a tad too grainy for my liking.

The Roasted Happy Porky ($2.7) was palatable as well. I like the use of flavoured rice (油饭) which paired excellently with the sio bak. As I was going through the bowl, I found myself craving for the chicken rice chilli sauce which I believe, would have made the bowl even tastier!

As I suspected, the recipes behind the dishes at Happy Bowl were created by an ex-hawker, who was previously running a wanton noodles stall at MacPherson Road. The standard of the food was pretty good, and seemed to have been whipped up by an experienced hawker.

I found out from Alvin that Happy Bowls just settled in. They just got their menus printed on the day of my visit.

I really wanted to try their Century Egg Porridge ($2.3) as it is a personal favourite of mine, but they were sold out for the day. Alvin told me that he had a customer who returned for 16 days straight just for their century egg porridge!
