Nanyang Curry in Yishun Park Hawker Centre serves up piping hot bowls of curry-based items — from the classic Curry Chicken to Fish to Pork Rib — you name it, they have it.

It was near noon, and I spotted a long queue forming but thankfully I managed to beat the lunch crowd and collected my food shortly after ordering. Despite their menu being relatively lean, I found myself struggling to decide which to indulge in. In the end, I opted for their signature Curry Chicken ($5) that came with four chicken wings and two huge halves of potato submerged in a pool of curry.

Diving in straight for a spoonful of the gravy, I was greeted with some relatively thick and aromatic curry. I really liked how the spice was just right too, not too overpowering and not too underwhelming at the same time. Since their dishes are served a la carte, I also ordered a serving of Bread ($1) on the side to pair my Curry Chicken with. Initially, I had imagined the bread would just be a regular baguette. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the bread had already been sliced and toasted till the exterior was crisp.

Don’t be fooled by the colour of the chicken wings. The meat was so tender, it fell right off the bone. On top of that, the soft potato had soaked up all the goodness from the curry. All that coupled with the toasted bread, I can definitely understand why this stall sees such long queues.

Besides the Curry Chicken, I also went for a bowl of Curry Fish Meat ($6.50). This took a longer time of about 10 minutes to prepare as compared to the rest but it was worth the wait. While the curry had the same consistency as the previous one, this gravy had a slightly sweeter taste. I suppose the individual ingredients for the various dishes are cooked in a standard base of curry, giving each dish a unique flavour profile.

As I fished around (no pun intended) the bowl, I found a generous thick chunk of fish, some lady’s fingers, half a tomato and some taupok. And boy, was the fish fresh. Here, the meat had a firm bite, and a tinge of sweetness. Hands down, a personal favourite of mine.

The last of the lot that I tried was their Curry Pork Rib ($5.50) where the curry had a stronger, meatier hint. Similar to the other dishes, the amount of pork ribs and potato given was generous. Needless to say, the pork ribs too were tender and fell right off the bone! The spices in the curry also helped to mask the meaty taste of the pork a little. For this, I decided to pair it with some fluffy White Rice ($0.60).

Besides Pork Ribs, they also offer a Curry Mutton ($6.50) and a Curry Chicken Chop Rice ($5.50) that comes blanketed in curry. If you’e after some greens, they also offer a Curry Vegetable ($3).

Having thoroughly enjoyed the three different curry-based dishes I had, I’ll definitely be back to satisfy my curry cravings in the future. Be sure to come early to beat the crowd!
