I first knew about Seletar Sheng Mian when I was still staying in Ang Mo Kio. This was my grandfather’s and my favourite lunch spot. The brand used to be at the defunct Seletar Hills Food Centre, before the elder brother of this family business opened a stall in Toa Payoh Lorong 8, and the younger brother opened one at Kebun Baru Food Centre.

Whenever I travel to Toa Payoh, I will always make a detour to the Toa Payoh branch for breakfast. The elder brother has already handed the operations to his sons and they have recently renamed it as Nine Stone Avenue (Seletar) Mee Hoon Kway and Sheng Mian [九条石 (實里達) 生麵和麵粉粿]. Why nine stone? That’s where their first stall Seletar Hills Food Centre was located.

To be honest, I prefer the Toa Payoh outlet to the Ang Mo Kio one because the soup here is so tasty and prawns are really fresh. They have the perfect combination of fresh ingredients: generous leafy greens, marinated minced pork, lean pork slices, large juicy prawns, fresh runny egg, fragrant onion crisps, crispy ikan bilis, and handmade chewy QQ Mee Hoon Kway (or mee hoon kueh).

I love that the third generation brothers are still hand-pulling the dough while many other mee hoon kueh stalls have already been using machines to make it. As simple as they look, these hand-torn pieces require a huge deal of practice to get right. The best ones are soft, slippery yet incredibly chewy at the same time. The minced pork in the soup makes the dish extra tasty and I can’t help it but to polish the bowl clean every time I am there.

Their mouthwatering Mee Hoon Kway comes in both soup and dry versions and is a perfect pick-me-up for a long work week ahead. Their chilli sauce is unique — savoury and slightly sweet at the same time. The chilli does not pack a lot of heat, but the savoury sauce is tasty. Sprinkling some fried shallots and crispy ikan bilis will make it even better. You can also try their sheng mian, it is equally tasty.

There’s always something really comforting about a bowl of mee hoon kway. The three brothers definitely have mastered the art of the dish and added their own twists to this traditional dish. It’s a hearty meal especially on a rainy day.
