The past year has seen a considerable boom in chee cheong fun stalls on our little island and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Jumping onto the band-wagon in a quaint coffee shop in Yishun Ave 4 is Yakone Food Chee Cheong Fun which offers five types of chee cheong fun

The stall recently opened in May 2022 without much fanfare and I was surprised to find out that the boss behind it is only 23 years old. Talk about inspirational! Everything is made from scratch in-house, from the rice slurry and Hong Kong-style sauce to the chilli.

One of their chee cheong fun variations makes use of vegetarian goose, which is quite an unusual option that’s rarely seen in hawker centres and coffee shops. I later learnt that it was to cater to the tastes of the elderly folks in the area and true enough, I spied quite a few of them ordering it without hesitation.

Apart from the Vege Goose Chee Cheong Fun ($4), other options include classics such as HK Style Chee Cheong Fun ($3), Fresh Mushroom ($4), Char Siew ($4) and Fresh Prawn ($5).

Let’s kick things off with the Fresh Mushroom that saw plenty of shimeji mushrooms rolled into the silky smooth sheets of rice rolls. The gossamer-thin chee cheong fun beautifully soaked up the sauce. I also loved how the pleasantly earthy mushrooms were perfectly balanced out by the sweetness of the toothsome sauce that had a tinge of saltiness.

Moving on to the Fresh Prawn Chee Cheong Fun; this rendition paired the best with the chilli on the side. While the prawns were on the slightly smaller side, they were nice and crunchy. The chilli emitted an intense hae bee hiam (spicy dried shrimp) flavour and brought forth a slight heat that didn’t overwhelm the flavours of the chee cheong fun itself.

I’m usually not one for vegetarian dishes (not that I would be eating goose, though), but the Vege Goose Chee Cheong Fun is definitely one that I would order again. The slivers of vegetarian goose were slightly crispy and reminded me a lot of tau kee (beancurd skin). There was a distinct crunch when I bit into the cheong fun, despite it having spent some time sitting in the sauce.

The competition is tough when it comes to the best chee cheong fun stall but Yakone Food Chee Cheong Fun will definitely be one of my go-tos if I happen to be in the Yishun ‘hood!
